Does well water shut off when power goes out?
If you experience a power outage, your well pump will not work. You will continue to use water for a short time, as your system draws the remaining water from the well storage tank. However, once that water is used – you will not have access to fresh water until power is restored.
How do you restart a well after a power outage?
To prime this type of well pump:
- Use a hose to fill both the pump casing and suction line with water.
- Turn off the control valve.
- Run the pump whilst the priming plug is fitted loosely.
- Stop the pump as soon as the air bubbles stop bubbling out in the area surrounding the priming plug.
How long will a well work without power?
If the electricity goes out, how long is the water good for? In most situations, the water will not go bad during a short power outage. It is very rare that a power outage lasts more than three days. However, the caveat to that is if there is a flood as part of the storm that causes the power outage.

How can I get well water without electricity?
All you need to do is add enough 2″ diameter PVC pipe (available from any hardware or plumbing supply store) to reach the water. You can tell how far it is to the water by dropping a weighted string down into the well. Like any shallow well pump, it may need priming the first time you use it.

How do you flush without electricity?
Try these two methods to flush your toilet during a power outage:
- Tank refill. Take the ceramic cover off the tank in the back of your toilet. Take some water and fill the tank with approximately 3/4 of a gallon.
- Gravity flush. I use this method all the time. Lift the lid and seat cover to expose the beauty of the bowl.
Can you use the water if the power is out?
1. If you’re in a house: Water should continue to flow for a little while after the outage but it will most likely run at a lower pressure than you’re used to. Without electricity, the pump will stop working and water will not be able to be pumped up.
How long can you leave a well pump off?
Q. How many hours does a well pump run a day? Answer: On average, it can run up to 2 and a half hours.
Does a well pump use a lot of electricity?
Well pumps use a huge amount of energy every time they start up. It is not uncommon for people to have 3/4 hp pumps installed in their wells equaling 30 minutes of pumping per day or 350 kWh/yr, while a ½ hp pump, which uses only 240 kWh/yr, would be sufficient.
What happens to your well water when the power goes out?
If you have well water, you will likely be unable to use your well water during a power outage. Well pumps are almost always powered by electricity, which means that when the power’s out, no water will flow.
How can I Turn Off my well water?
So now that you understand some of the basics, lets turn the water off. Like the municipal water supply you will find one or two shut off valves. In the photo above the well and pump are away from the house so there is a shut off at this location. There may also be one where the water supply enters the house.
Where are the shut off valves on a well?

What happens when you turn off the water pump?
In a household system, with a pressure tank and gauge, the pressure switch normally has a safety feature, if the water pressure drops below a preset level (with the power off) the switch will not engage (when the power is turned back on) to send power to the pump.
When to turn off and on well water source?
When the switch senses that the water pressure is below a specified limit the switch automatically engages and sends power to turn on the pump. When the pressure reaches the high limit setting it then turns itself off, stopping the pump.
What happens if you turn off your well pump?
In rare cases, a broken water line can siphon water out of the hot water heater, causing damage to the unit. One last word of caution before shutting off the well pump system: first, make certain there is no requirement for water during your absence, such as make-up water for your heating system, such as a hydronic system.
What happens to your well when the power goes out?
As mentioned earlier, if you get your water from a well and experience a power outage, the pump for your well will not work. Although you will be able to continue using the water remaining in your storage tank, once it’s used up, you will be without water until the power comes back.
